After disassembling the printer to clean out all the gunked up ink in an effort to get things operating better (I had a strange print quality problem) once I reassembled the printer, the print carriage head now hits the cover as it slides back and forth.

When the printer boots up, I get an error 6502 which from what I can tell means that the print head is not moving correctly.

Has anyone opened disassembled their printer? Have they encountered this situation? How did you resolve it? The clearances are definitely tight and I can't seem to figure out what's happening even though it seems everything is seated properly.

My next course of action will be to cut away the part of the cover that is hitting the print head. Just because I don't care anymore. :) Thanks!

Hi @CajunJoel and welcome, It’s obvious that the top cover is not seated properly otherwise the print carriage would not knock against it, but if you can’t get it back into the correct position then you’ll have to trim a piece from the cover.

When you power on the printer and lift the top lid just pull the power plug from the socket and this will allow you to move the print head slowly by hand to locate the offending part that’s in the way of it’s free movement..

I have the service manual, and I used it to disassemble and reassemble. I (ahem) modified the cover so the carriage wasn't hitting it, so that's not the problem anymore. I can't figure it out now. There doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong as far as I can tell. I'm going to keep looking.

I suppose the next step is to look at what, if anything, the Service Tool has to say about what's going on. I already have a copy of it from two different places.

FWIW, the Service Manual says 6502 is "Ink tank position sensor error" and to fix it, do one of the following:

(1) Ink tank position: Confirm the ink tank position.
(2) Re-set or replacement of ink tanks: If the error persists, replace the ink tanks.
(3) Cable connection: - Ink absorber multi harness (CN701) - Re-connect the cable.

So that's where I'll look next. :)

(Edited to include info from the service manual.)
