OBW. After I get my replacement I am happy to give someone in the Wash DC area my 2 non working printers for trivial
apmount. AmI allowed to make offer here?

These printers use 520/521 carts
  • Canon PIXMA MP540
  • Canon PIXMA MP550
  • Canon PIXMA MP560
  • Canon PIXMA MP620
  • Canon PIXMA MP630
  • Canon PIXMA MP640
  • Canon PIXMA MP980
  • Canon PIXMA MP990
  • Canon PIXMA MX860
  • Canon PIXMA MX870
  • Canon PIXMA iP3600
  • Canon PIXMA iP4600
  • Canon PIXMA iP4700
Please note that this type was succeeded by the 525/526 range and afterwards by 550/551.
You still can find these grandfathers in working condition second hand.
Only buy from people who can show a nozzle check print.
Depending on the type pay not more than €10-15 for an IP3600, 25-30 for an 4600,4700 and maximum 50 for the best all-in-ones.

Only if you have a lot of old cartridges.

You can buy a new MG5650 for €80.
Add €50-60 for a set of auto-reset refillable (550/551) cartridges and 500ml of ink (that's 50 cartridges) and you're started again.
Afterwards you pay only €30 for the ink.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I am giving up on fixing my 2 broken MX860 printers [unless someone offers a great new fix that works]. See my other posts over the last 2-3 days about the MX860 issues.
[Short summary-One printer won't turn on. The other, with a new printhead, doesn't print. It goes through ALL the motions but doesn't put ANY ink on paper].

I now need to decide among options to replace my Canon MX860 printer. I'm having emotional withdrawal symptoms without a color printer!

I have been using non-oem compatible, non-refillable cartridges for the MX860. I have about 20 carts on hand.
Option 1 for me would be to buy a used Mx860 or better still a used MX870 printer.
I can use my on-hand cartridges and continue to buy non-oem carts.

Option 2 is to buy a NEW MX922 [$100 USD].I think that it has all the features of my MX860. If I am wrong please tell me. I would not be able to use my 20 carts and likely could not sell them either. There are non-oem CLI 250/251 carts for the MX922. They contain about 50% more ink than MX870 carts but cost about double MX870 cart prices. I'll say Option 2a is the MX922 and non-oem carts.

Another Option I'll call Option 2b is to buy refillable MX922 carts[ get quality ones if possible] and buy good quality ink. I don't understand the discussion about re-setting chips for recent model Canon printers.
I saw a web page for Precision Colors that indicated they have a refillable CLI 250/251.
I think their refillable cart acts like an OEM cart in respect to amount of ink, low ink warnings and prevention of running with no ink.

Please share your OPINION/RECOMMENDATION on Options 1, 2a or 2b- I understand it will be YOUR opinion. It will be very valuable to me.
Or have I missed MUCH BETTER OPTIONS.

Some criteria:
I hate losing the value of my existing 20 MX860 carts but will do that for a much better solution.
The total cost of the 20 carts was only ABOUT $50 USD

I print mostly color on plain paper but need capability to print good quality[no important photos like weddings] photos on photo glossy paper.
A used MX870 will cost me about $100 USD including shipping.
A New MX922 will cost me about $100 USD including shipping.
Refilling carts isn't my favorite thing but if it yields a much better quality solution at a lower price than me buying non-oem MX922 carts[around $4 USD each] I will happily become a cart refiller.

MX860/MX870 features that are important to me going forward11 include:

Automatic feed for duplex scanning and for duplex printing.
Mac OSX, Win 7, 8.1 and Win 10 compatible.[May not have Win 10 drivers yet, but will work with Win 10 & Win 8.1 using Win 7 drivers]
Ethernet,USB and WiFi connectivity. {No need for Apple 1349 or Lightning connectivity}
Decent photo printing.
Relatively easy cartridge replacement.
Wide availability of replacement printhead.
I would LIKE easy options for copier such as zoom or reduce.
I'm not sure if I need scanning of negatives.
I don't need FAX.
I don't need 2 different paper feeds.
I don't need CD printing.
I don't need quiet operation
I don't need SD or other memory card support.
I don't need on board photo preview screen.
I don't need small footprint.

I might say I lost my hair thinking about options. The truth is it has been gone for more than half a century.

Do not put your $50 worth of cartridges in the equation.
A decent MX860 and the like is worth maximum $/€ 50, so you put the money in your pocket, not the seller.

If not, a MX922 is only $85 at Amazon.

PS: if you use 3th party cartridges or refill ink your photos may not be for eternity, if you plan to be serious in this consider pigment ink printers.

Thanks.
YOU have convinced me to not be hung up with my inventory of carts. Consider that I am happy to pay around $100 USD for a NEW Canon printer that has or exceeds the features and quality of the MX860. Is that the MX922 or MG5660[MG5620 in US] Or is your recommendation another Canon? I understand that I will then need to buy refillable carts that perform similar to OEM providing fill info and out of ink warnings.
Then I will refill with a good quality ink from some company such as Precision.
I ask this because I am not sure of my ability to absorb the details of the printed specs correctly at my age. Having "lifetime" prints for me isn't long. :D My heirs seem only to look at photos on their phones or rarely on their monitors.

If you plan to refill the worth of (the ink in) your existing inventory is negligible, and the fade resistance not better (or worse).

The only advantage of the previous series (520/521 and 525/526 in Europe) is that you can reset and refill the OEM Canon cartridges, BUT you need to find or buy them.
Also finding good second hands takes cost time, gas, and is risky.

At the end the total cost risks to be the same as buying new.
