So after 1 year of use, I flush out the CLI-42s I've been using just to clear out ink residue. I don't use the pharmacists cleaning solution, rather I use straight undiluted clear ammonia (while wearing an APR & safety goggles). Where this worked fine with cleaning out everything (even yellow), magenta left a surprise behind. This cartridge is the setup cartridge for the printer, which was refilled with the earlier PC magenta (before the biocide issue was discovered). Since the collection of spots is only along the channel, I'm assuming that it was caused by fungus. Has anyone seen this problem?

As far as I can tell, this sponge is dead, and I'll repurpose a purged yellow as a replacement magenta. I haven't done light gray or photo magenta yet, so if fungus was the cause of the magenta problem, should I immediately purge photo magenta?

There are no spots on the sides. There are some spots between where the ink well and the sponge meet. Isopropyl alcohol and boiled water (87C) had no effect.

What these spots affected your cartridge ? Is it prevent ink from sink from tank to sponge?

OK why not try final if you feel its dead the chlorine cleaning solution from your home(2 ml with 0.5L of water) ? with some amount of hot water (30C) for long time period till next morning.

Very hot water is not something I would recommend for cleaning the inner sponge of an OEM cartridge, nor pure ammonia either, common bleach and cold water would be more that effective in my opinion..

I prefer using ammonia because it's less aggressive than bleach. I wasn't going to use bleach because I don't want to worry about it modifying the properties of the sponge in the cartridge (I have no idea what it's made of) and I'm concerned that it might react and leave something behind (chlorine reacts with a lot of stuff) instead of pulling residue into solution and carrying it off.
