My Pixma Pro9000 (that I refill myself) looks like it might be nearing it's end. It's starting to make a much louder clunking noise in the paper forwarding mechanism. And it refused to print at all for quite a while with 10 flashes of the yellow light.

Some basic questions: I'm considering some newer Canon printers - the 350 wireless and the Pixma Pro9000 Mark 2. I don't really need anything high quality for the printing I do - just basic line on plain paper - no photography or art prints.

I'm mostly wondering if these new models still allow one to refill the carts myself? Or has Canon figured out a way to make it totally impossible?

I'm guessing the loud clunking noise is something mechanical that has given way - but I guess it might take all day to take it apart and find out. I've had bad luck trying to keep old printers going in the past... good money after bad.

Thanks for any input or suggestions. I remember this board from when it was part of nifty-stuff...

Just because it’s making a bit of a racket each time it prints doesn’t mean it’s for the knacker’s yard, try cleaning the feed roller and that might help make it a bit quieter.

The 10 orange flashing lights only means that you have the front tray in the wrong position, it has some how been raised, try lowering it and press the resume button to continue to print.

Try to keep your printer going for as long as you can because the newer models are not as user friendly to the refilled as your current one is. (No more free lunch)

Thanks! I didn't suspect the feed tray - but I now that I reset the front tray level I see it's back to the 'normal' noise level. Yes, I'll definitely hang on to my old printers - obviously since I'm still running the Epson 2200 I like the simpler older models. Does the Canon Pixma Pro9000 mark II allow one to keep refilling carts by disabling the chip counter?, the same way my old Pixma Pro9000 does? My Pixma Pro9000 doesn't have the 'mark II' after the title. Not sure what differences they added with the mark II.

Thanks...

Yes you can disable ink monitoring to allow refilling the cartridges for both models of the printer, but it is strongly recommended to buy a resetter and reset the cartridges when refilled. This way you keep the ink monitoring and don´t risk running a cartridge empty and ruining the print head.

One difference is how service mode operations are performed. To select and execute service mode operations on the old model push button codes are used, for the newer mark II model a special software tool is needed for the service mode operations.

There might be more differences between the models.
