I received a MX885 all-in-one printer for free (no error messages but blank nozzle check).

After a warm bath in pharmacist solution and a few drops of ammonia the head looked much better but not perfect.
I doubt about the Photo Black, all nozzles seem to be present but are laterally displaced.
A second bath overnight did not improve the situation.

My idea was to exchange the head with a MG5250, since the MX885 has more possibilities.

If the BK nozzles image announces a head or electronic board failure, I better drop this idea.

Any opinion ?

If the two heads are the same then it’s worth a try, well I would have a go anyway, but that’s me.. :D

Hard to know..the black bar looks suspicious but I'm not sure ... Anyway I would pay attention to inkflow! Quite often it is a bad (refilled) cartridge or a bad sealing of cart outlet to printhead inlet, which is causing the trouble...

Can you get a service test print from the unit? It will be a much better indicator of the issue.

Because the BK looks very suspicious indeed I played safe and masked the contacts according to Lukasz' posts on this subject.

Here the new nozzle check, same in service mode.
Based on the EEPROM information, the previous owner spent more ink on filling the absorber than on printing.

Since the MX885 has a 35 page double-side ADF, I hope to achieve my plan to exchange the printhead with the good one of a MG5250. The amputated head still can be used for office single side printing.

FYI

The head transplantation (in service mode) was successful, both patients survived the operation.

Yep, my daughter in law has now 2 printers for her teaching job.

PS: lost a few days to solve a bug causing the scan program to crash in Windows 7 (a file too much in the \Windows\Twain_32 folder).
