I've heard rumors to the effect that if one downloads firmware updates for the Canon MX 472, you'll not be able to refill any of the CL 241-XL or PG 240-XL cartridges. Is this true?

There have been reports that Epson has used firmware upgrades to disable compatible cartridges/chips, but I have not (yet?) seen reports of Canon doing the the same.

I think this is considered good advice: Unless you absolutely need the feature offered by the firmware upgrade, don't upgrade. If something goes wrong during the flashing of the EEPROM, you will have a useless printer.
