The paper is jammed!

I have a Canon MP610 which I use for printing A4 flyers. It has worked perfectly for two years. What now happens is that it picks up the paper from the rear tray, draws it in about one third its length and then stops before printing commences. As far as I can tell it always stops at the same point. The message that appears is that the paper is jammed. It can be pulled out of the machine (against the resistance that exists) and printing can continue. What was an occasional fault now affects about one sheet in twenty. The feed rollers have been regularly cleaned. Additional cleaning has not not improved the situation.

My guess is that it's time to pension off the printer but if there is anyone with firsthand experience of this and can suggest a solution I would be grateful for feedback.

Something is stuck in the sensor or the sensor is half dead. You can try to use a service manual for your or similar printer to see where the sensor is and inspect it.

This doesn't solve the problem, but I think you're supposed to turn it off before you pull paper out, so you aren't working against the motor.

This a particularly interesting observation and might be linked to another problem I have written about and that is the printer starts to print in different positions depending on how thick or thin the paper is.

In a private conversation, Lukasz responded to this post stating that the problem could be overcome by the application of compressed air to the PE sensors. He provided several close-up photographs of the sensors and their positions. He has not communicated since and so I do not know his reason for not sharing this information in a public post. I have yet to try his suggestions. I will write again if they are successful

Try rubber rejuvenator on the feed rollers.

As far as I know Canon printer models MP and MX have 3 digit model numbers and MG model numbers are 4 digits. So is the printer with the problem an MP610? or MGxxxx?

Sorry for the error! It is an MP610. Unfortunately, it also confused Lukasz whose photos are for MGxxxx models and inevitably doesn't help to locate the sensors on a MP610!! I have since been told that they are embedded in the machine and not accessible without a fair bit of dismantling.

I checked and the motor stops immediately the jam is detected. Perhaps that's not the case for different models

Of course it stops, but that doesn't mean you can turn it without risking damage. The directions for printers I have seen tell you not to do this. Unfortunately, they don't exactly put the directions where anyone could possibly find them.
