'Universal' Ink across printer brands - Epson, Canon , HP , Lexmark etc is the worst compromise possible.
'Universal' ink for a range of Epson printers - e.g. foto - dye - is technically possible, and possible color shifts can be corrected with icm-profiles - same for a dye ink to be used on a range of IPxxx printer models etc, every dealer understands the wording of 'universal' to his benefit. Same for the trick to use a dye black in place of the pigment black - the pigment black channel prints with greater droplets, pigments don't disperse on fibrous normal paper, but dye ink does , it prints, it looks bad - so what is the benefit ?

Technically universal ink is possible by print head tech, piezo or thermal.
Then if you can adjust ink linearization curves of printer the printer can use ink made for it's printhead.

To make this happen one needs to have printfab printer driver and ask developers to add the promised linearization feature.

Epson 3880. Canon Pro 9000,
You are all very, very wrong.

It is NOT POSSIBLE TO SAVE REFILLING.

The whole proposition is utterly silly. The QUESTION is correctly, is it less expensive to refill inks if you choose to start spending money on printing - surely?

If I didn't have 3 printers, I would be $2,600 better off
If I had never bought Inks I would be up by roughly the same Dollars
I would not have had to buy a $2,500 screen
I would never have bought two screen calibration devices, $1,100
I would never have spent $2-3,000 on special paper
I would never have bought Framing equipment, another $1,000 odd
I would not have spent around $1,500 on Adobe products
I would not have spent about the same on books related to printing and colour management.
I would not have spent in excess of $10,000 on cameras an lenses.

In short I would actually have SAVED money, which is the thread question:gig

Had I not spent so much money, I would indeed have been richer in cash assets,

BUT

Much much poorer in spirit, in enjoyment, in company, and learning.

Had I followed many and stayed with OEM inks, at $800+ per set for the Epson, $130 per set for the little Canon, and about the same for a little Epson multifunction I SHUDDER to think of the outlay there

Finally I would have missed out on your esteemed company for the last few years..

Crikey!.......I am bloody MAD after all, where did I put that ruddy FOIL HAT!!

:hugs

It’s not till you stand back from the refilling and analyse the whole situation like @3dogs has done :caf that you find it is in fact very expensive, time consuming, totally addictive and wholly enjoyable :p and you don’t want to be cured and hang the expense because it’s all worth it, :weee(Sound) Door banging, Wife just leaving Again, :hide :clap now where did I leave that syringe.. :hu :D
