Can non-OEM inkl cause printhead failure?

Some years ago there were real problems caused by ‘cogation’, the deposit of dried ink on a thermistor in a print head. As a supplier of compatible cartridges we had to replace a number of print heads, mainly for the Canon BJ300 and 800 printers. We believe Canon had this problem too.
Bad ink can still cause problems. Most ink is good – but I have heard many horror stories, mostly from China. I always recommend that users go to a reputable supplier. They know which are the good Chinese manufacturers and these use good ink.
My company was once Europe’s largest master distributor of compatible inkjet cartridges, bringing in 160,000 units every week. Now, Incartek sells a full range of cartridges for Epson and Hewlett Packard, manufactured by Ninestar (G&G Brand). Ninestar is probably China’s best resourced company in the supplies industry.

Canon printheads are consumable items with a limited lifetime, various service manuals specify the rated number of pages, b/w (text), color 10x15 and graphics/olor A4. I don't have the numbers anymore,
but it is easy to reach those numbers. Typically people printing more tend to use refill/3rd party cartridges to keep the printing cost under control. Refill ink may impact such lifetime somewhat but you'll reach the useful end of a Canon printhead as well with the original ink, and you'll get problems which you can't clean away, and at the end the printhead will smoke, or report a B200 error, or destroy the motherboard etc. Thermal/bubble printheads are like that, look to HP, printheads for various of their printer models are listed together with the inks as consumables, only HP printheads at the end of their usefull life will not kill
your motherboard. You can argue whether it's a design fault, but it is like that since the days of the BJC7000 from last millenium.
