Well, I've gone and done it. I had to print some CDs, and it didn't look like the printer was going to cough up any more. It did somehow cough up the last seven after multiple tries, but that could be a fluke.

So what did I get? Another one just like it, of course, with a head that just won't die and a wireless radio that surely will. A printer that has more negative reviews than positive. It's odd that that didn't occur to me before. But it's the devil I know, and it prints well.

I almost took the easy way out and got a nice Canon or Epson, but what would I do with myself with a reliable printer that I didn't have to fix or take apart for spare parts? And I certainly wouldn't want to get anything that's too easy to refill. Just to maximize my pain, I waited until the last reasonably priced new one was sold, and bought a store demo without any ink--at a not particularly cheap price. It darned well better print when it gets here, but just in case the (unused) head is dried up, I'll have not one, but two spare heads -- not that I'm likely to need them. This head has, shall we say, passed the stress test many times. :)

P.S. The new printer arrived, so the old one is on its best behavior.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, Hat. I just happened to stop by and I saw your post.

For what it's worth, the demo HP is still going strong, sort of. Even the wi-fi still works (first one yet out of three that I've had!). The sheet feeder has always been anemic because the roller doesn't press hard enough (and I've changed rollers).

I've gone through a couple of heads. I can report, however, that the cheap ones from Ebay work fine, even if they are fraudulently sold as new. Someone cleans them out. They are not packed with fluid for shipping, so it takes a while for the ink to soak into all the channels, but then they do work.

I've got two big Canons (Pro 10 and 1000?) that are probably hopelessly dried up, and an old, unopened Pro 100 still in the box. I've almost given up on printing photos because of problems getting the control I want. Oh, well. Sooner or later I'll have more time for it, and will throw money at it if necessary. Happy New Year to all.

I occurs to me that if you dont plan on using that unopened Pro100 anytime soon (or ever ), you might sell it with a nice profit. New Pro-100s are highly coveted right now, because people who wants to refill won't consider buying a Pro-200.
