Error 005 indicates that the printer is not recognized by the PC. The Service tools only work with a USB connection, so the use of a USB cable is mandatory even if the printer has wireless capability. It is also important that only the printer you want to do service mode operations on is connected to the computer, no other printers must be connected to the computer when doing service mode operations.

If you haven't used your printer with a USB connection, this must first be installed before you can use the service tools. The easiest way is to connect the printer to the computer via USB and turn it on. Windows Update will then search for and supply a driver for the printer. After the install is complete turn of the printer and enter service mode.

Error 006 indicates that the printer has not entered service mode or is not supported by the service tool.

The procedure for entering service mode is different for different printers. Some printers require the stop/resume button pressed twice, others 5 times, but I have also seen the numbers 4 and 6 times mentioned. The procedure for entering service mode is found in the service manual for the printer, but the service manual for this printer is nowhere to be found, so you will have to try different procedures. The MG5540 is a new generation printer using the PGI-x50/CLI-x51 cartridges, and no info about service tools and service mode operations for these new printers has been posted on the forum.

Here is a post with a list of service tool error messages.

Here is the procedure for entering service mode for the MG5220. The same procedure might apply to your printer. I have edited the instruction slightly to make it more clear:

i. With the machine power turned off, while pressing the Stop button, press and hold the ON button. (DO NOT release the buttons.)
ii. When the Power LED lights in green, while holding the ON button, release the Stop button. (DO NOT release the ON button.)
iii. While holding the ON button, press and release the Stop button 5 times, and then release the ON button. (Each time the Stop button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in green.)
iv. When the Power LED lights in green, the machine is ready for the service mode operation (nothing is displayed on the LCD).

The newest versions of the service tools support the most printers, so version 3400 or possibly the version 3600 is recommended. The newer version of service tools support all Windows versions from XP and on, both 32 and 64 bits. The service tools only work with Windows, MacOS and Linux are not supported.

Here is a post with the newest links to service tools. And here is a link to version 3600. This version is only partly translated from Chinese (?), so if anybody has a link to a better version, please post it.

I hope this helps.

Hi Dr Anwar,

The biggest problem with your printer is that it’s too new and to date nobody knows exactly how to enter Service Mode correctly with this model, you could try pressing the Resume button twice on the off chance that it might work.

There’s another problem you may also face, if you did in fact enter Service mode on an earlier occasion and weren’t aware of it and just exited without change anything, this too can lock you out of getting back into Service Mode again and if this is the case then you’ll have to return the printer to Canon Service, or get a new printer..

I advice you contact the service center as your manual suggest for this printer.

Or try these steps as try

Dr. Anwar, you have two of the best problem solvers helping you - PeterBJ and The Hat. It seems that the issue for all is the newness of your printer model. There is little experience yet. However, trying different button presses may get you into Service Mode as The Hat said. Also, it could be that an older version of Service Tool, such as 3.400, may work.

I present the following link as a new theoretical and radical fix but not one I suggest Dr Anwar try at this time. Interesting and old school approach - solder in another printer's EEPROM or somehow dump a new or lightly used .BIN file into your EEPROM chip.

Hi Dr Anwar

I wouldn’t bother any more trying to enter Service Mode because I reckon you have locked yourself out by entering Service Mode the first time and not using it, this was reported before by another member also.

I do sympathize with your dilemma because I am in much the same situation as yourself and the only thing you can do now is to get another new printer and start again, sorry.
