I'm new here, and with my canon pixar pro-100 as a starter I'm looking to learn about printing. Inks, refilling, calibration, etc etc... and all the stuff I've yet to learn about that I don't know - I don't know!

Welcome! Your Canon PRO-100 can be refilled! BUT!!!

You will need a resetter to reset the electronic chips attached to each cart to use them after refilling, else the printer refuses to "recognize" the cart.

You must use good inks. Many here would recommend:

http://www.precisioncolors.com/

They also can provide the resetter, and refill kits and instructions.

It is highly recommended that you AVOID refilling the YELLOW CL-42 cart, due to Canon's recent yellow ink formulation that has proven to be incompatible with refilling (causes gelling in the printhead). Use a cleaned CLI-8 cart and transfer the chip from the CL-42 yellow cart to the CLI-8 cart. Cleaned CLI-8 carts are available at Precisioncolors, too.

Calibration may not be needed, unless you are really picky about proper colors. Then you will have to use extended color management tools (profiles), all the way through your workflow.

Prepare to get ink on your fingers!

Thanks for the info!
I've ordered a refill kit and resetter, and yellow cart. Very helpful!

Hmm, can't the yellow cart be purged, and still used?

All of them! LOL
Yes, but you have to purge it very thoroughly with Windex and the flush the heck out of it with water. I've managed to successfully purge three OEM Yellow CLI-42 carts than are working perfectly fine to date

That's why I said "highly recommended" to avoid refilling the CLI-42 yellows. There is a risk due to inadequate purging that you do not have to take...

With the 25% concentrated Ammonia there should be no problem to purge it, besides the cost of the industrial stuff is same for 1L of the stuff compared to pharmacy 10% and only 125ml.

It’s easier, safer and more economical, just remove the chip and dump the yellow cart than it is to start frigging around trying to clean it, in fact don’t use the yellow cart if at all possible.

We know the yellow problem is there so why not just circumvent this issue by using a CLl-8 cart to begin with, then you can enjoy your printer without having to worry about purging any carts, that’s what I’d do..

Understood, but happens if canon starts using all inks like this? Or introduces inks like this in pro-100 ? You never know what canon thinks, and they do read these forums.

Then we are screwed???
The yellow OEM ink is an isolated example and they are not going to reformulate the rest of the inks just to screw us refillers.
Even if they did, you would simply use purged CLI-8 carts with the CLI-42 chips. So no problem!
