...should be built right into the printers!

They have internal clocks.

They can wake themselves up from sleep.

They can determine if paper is present.

They can spit ink onto the parking pad if paper is not available.

An excellent idea @turbguy, but I reckon it should be added as an extra button in Maintenance, like Auto power, Quiet Mode or Custom Setting !

At least that might prevent the conspirator’s complaining about Canons excessive ink wasting and cleaning.. :rant

Custom button is good idea - same like in cameras or in mobile phones.

Just I wonder, internal clocks are for sure, but not sure if they are running all the time, especially when printer is disconnected from electricity.

Look like wake up ability is present only on some models, or maybe is dependable on driver version?
I have currently installed bunch of ink type X25/X26 printers:
  • iP4900 series (iP4950, in US it is iP4920)
  • MG5100 series
  • MG5200 series
  • MG6200 series
And auto power on feature is only in iP4900.
MG6200 is missing this feature, but it still has auto power off functionality.
Auto power on and auto power off functionality is completely missing in MG5100 and MG5200 (but driver tab power off button is present).

All the dye Canon desktop printers have this facility for turning on the printer automatically, (USB cable) whereas all of the pigment printer must be turn on using the power button.

All the dye Canon desktop printers have this facility for turning on the printer automatically, (USB cable) (...)

Here are screen shots of driver tab from four dye based Canon printers:
  • iP4900 series:
    capture_0001.png

    And "Auto Power" dialog:
    capture_0009.png

By default, "Auto Power On" is set to "Enable".

  • MG6200 series:
    capture_0005.png

    And "Auto Power" dialog:
    capture_0006.png

"Auto Power On" option is not present(!)

  • MG5100 series:
    capture_0003.png

No "Auto Power" option at all.

  • MG5200 series:
    capture_0004.png

Again - no "Auto Power" option at all

Now, what is the difference between "Auto Power On" settings?

With default setting, "Auto Power On" set to "Enable"

When printer is connected to power outlet in the wall and to computer via USB, then it is instantly reported as a ready in printer folder:
capture_0008.png

But power led on printer is off(!).
The printer is for sure in power up state - putting anything to printer spooler makes power led on printer blinking and printer running.

When "Auto Power On" is set to "Disable", the printer is in offline state regardless of connecting it to outlet power and USB.

In such condition, any spooler task is reported as not delivered to the pinter. Printer have to be power up manually by pressing on button.

Printers without "Auto Power On" feature (eg. MG5100 series, MG5200 series and MG6200 series) are behaving as "APO" would be set to "Disable". In Wi-Fi enabled printers only USB was used.

It has been tested - it is not based on beliefs or assumptions.

The only reason that I can see for not having the auto power enabled on the 5100/5200 series printers is because they are AIO’s and this facility may affect the internal working of the scanner unit..
