When does the firmware upgrade take place?
It appears that the Epson printer tries to upgrade the firmware when the 'almost empty' screen is shown.

This screen dump shows a similar screen, but the carts aren't empty yet.

The upgrade takes place when the box 'buy Epson ink' is ticked or the box 'details' below that marked with the blue arrow.

So don't tick any boxes in this screen. An ink warning is just a signal that it's time to refill the cartridges.

Make sure that automatic updates are switched off. Note that your ARC chipped cartridges should be produced after the driver date.

The drivers below are dated 2012, so the ARC chips bought after 2012 should work properly.

What exactly happens when you click either "Buy Epson Inks" or "Details"?

Ahhh - the dreaded firmware (destructive) upgrade. I have an older top-of-the-line hand-held Garmin GPS unit for which I'd bought lifetime map upgrades. Last week I decided to upgrade my maps and inadvertently also upgraded the firmware. Now the unit has lost its bluetooth access! No pairing of my cell phone for hands free phone use!

After a few hours of futile efforts by Garmin to fix the problem I leaned on them until they finally agreed to send me a refurb new high end unit. All's well that ends well, but it took some extended discussions with a very nice Garmin tech rep to convince her that Garmin owed me an equivalent to what I had because Garmin's upgrade proved to be a "downgrade." Bottom line is that they ultimately went out of their way to do the right thing. It just took some persistence on my part to pleasantly state my case.

If this really is true, then I wonder if this procedure is legal? It makes me think of fraud or malware distribution by making people click a link that is not what it appears to be.

That’s a lovely story @fotofreek and I’m glad you got it sorted out so pleasantly but tell me, what did you do with the horses’ head that you were going to send to her if you couldn’t have got it sorted…

Then the firmware is upgraded (if there is an internet connection on that moment)
I got that from the original post. I was interested in what the next screen(s) were, such as were you warned of the impending firmware update and had an option to exit out. What exactly happened next, screen-wise?

Disconnect internet, install wireshark or similar software, click the buy button, switch back to wireshark to see what it tries to contact to and make note/copy and paste the domain, open router web config, block domain it tries to contact via firewall or similar router setting......

DONE, No more accidental updates :D

left it on the horse, of course! No need for me (or the horse) to lose my head once the battle was won.
