Canon Pixma MP620 error code

Started with loud clicking/clanking sound every time a head clean took place. A nozzle check revealed no Photo Black several cleanings no improvement. Filled a spare cart with NEW ink no difference and all the time there is this racket going on.

I pulled the Print head flushed it through, fitted 2" tube to PB inlet screen and syringed some window cleaner which went through 2/3 seconds repeated also Magenta and time the same, so cleaned/dried/re-installed. After a lengthy head clean with some clicking got a nozzle check all O.K PB about 25% there.

But when I tried another clean I got error code 5C00 which suggests foreign material around purge station, cable connection, Purge drive drive unit, logic board.

I pulled mains cable and pulled carriage over to the left. I shone a small halogen desk light in, could see the square purge pad and rectangular black one. The square one seemed very solid but touch the edge of the black one and it tilted up. I gently pushed it flat again. There were 2 vertical pieces of plastic which I assume are the wipers?.

Could not see any bits of paper or other debris. Does not look good any suggestions welcome.

Maybe the the porous plate for PGBK isn't positioned properly? Here is a post showing how the porous plates should be installed. Note proper position of the cut-off corner and the small rubber lips holding the plates.

The two vertical plastic pieces are wipers. You could check that they are not stuck in old ink, but are able to move. Old ink can be cleaned away using lots of Q-tips moistened with a window cleaner or just plain water.

Clicking noises are more likely caused by a mechanical error than an electronic error, I think.

As you know not easy to get a good view in this area but the square plate seems really solid if the PGBK is touched on the right hand side it did tilt a little, but a gentle touch in the middle settled it again. Eyesight/viewing position did not enable me to see the little locating corners but the gaskets seem OK. The wipers move OK but would not hurt to try cleaning them up a bit.

I have found a small piece of plastic approx. 3mm with a hook end lying in the bed at the other end of the M/C obviously broken off something but no other paper debris anywhere else. In spite of my attempts to clean the print head the PB is still only printing a line top and bottom plus the small bars on the side. I do not see any point wasting more ink/time trying to improve this until I can find out where this quite loud mechanical noise is coming from. The head makes the normal whirring sound when cleaning then this other racket starts which sometimes throws up the error code other times it does not. I took all the paper out from the rear tray and to me it sounds like the noise is coming from the back of the printer, nowhere near the purge station. Just bought another inkset. from Octoink for the 520 range

I was wondering about a stripped gear somewhere? Taking it to pieces may be beyond me I do have a 640 manual which looks similar, but would like to avoid this if possible. Thanks for suggestions PeterBj

Could you take some photo of that broken part?

5C00 error is faulty position of main purge unit, but it is also when purge unit sensor is dirt with ink.

Please note, that purge unit is mechanically same in any PGI-x20 / CLI-x21 and PGI-x25 / CLI-x26 printer.

I strongly suggest troubleshoot mechanical problem first (until fending off error 5C00), then using ink tanks and printhead.

Please note: in service mode, printer can run without inks and printhead installed, so you may examine purge drive / switch drive / APP motor operation.

Lukasz /PeterBJ Thank you for your efforts. Current position PB channel now back to about 95% have tried cleaning wipers and general area with q tips but no improvement. The M/C seems to want to continuously head clean, if you can get it to stop will produce a normal print.

The part is too small for my limited camera to reproduce. Whilst the noise is coming whilst head is parked, it seems to be coming from top left hand corner, and definitely mechanical in nature. I doubt my skills are up to taking this apart but will see if I can at least get covers off.

I am right fed up with printers this must be 3 that have gone down in 3/4 years. Luckily I still have my faithful HP Photosmart 7760 which can be left for weeks without use. Its fine for general use but no scanner and photo printing nowhere as good as the Canon.

But judging by the posts by The Hat and others there is not a lot of choice out there if you want to refill. Buying Secondhand seems a dodgy proposition.

You can make a cropped high resolution scan of the part. This will produce a magnified image of the part. Else you could try holding a magnifier in front of your camera as a close up lens. This actually works if you can find a lens with the right focal length, and auto focus will still work.

An example: This picture is a scan.

There are likely more sensors with the purge unit. There may be both optical sensors and cam operated micro switches. Maybe one sensor doesn't give a purging finished signal?

PeterBj tried to download MP620 manua from your suggested link l but avira my anti-virus blocked it stating virus's etc. I have found Avira very reliable so deleted file. Have you had any problems with this site?

I use AVG Internet Security, not the free version, and it doesn't block the site. I scan downloads with both AVG Internet Security and Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM) free version. Neither program found any threats in the download.

But electrotanya is an ad sponsored site, and you could easily pick up something unwanted if you click a wrong link. Hence this instruction.

This post has another link to the service manual for the MP620, but that server only works sporadically. You could give it a try again at different point of time, if the server is down.
