Hi,

It's true. In this way, I burned one printhead QY6-0080, which before print out nicely. The printer was running in user mode. Once removed, I checked the printhead and was electrically shorted (HV lines to anodes). And before that was OK.

I noticed that the printer in service mode greatly reduces the chance of burning another printhead. What's more, no need to put ink to find out the printhead error.

MP560 is almost same specs compared to MP620, but differs in terms of top cover design.
Scanner cover in MP560 is detachable - it can be a benefit while scanning books.

You can check the electrics of printhead from MP620.
You need to check a pair of contacts - the same as in taping method.
The top row of HV contacts is "+" and the bottom row is "-".
Separately for PGBK and CLI.

There can be no lower than 60 k ohms (usually 200-500), best if it conducts only one direction.

For example, damaged printhead (Error B200) with visible burns on CLI nozzles, is only 5 k ohms on CLI HV lines in both directions.

Visual inspection of the nozzles is also good thing.

@Łukasz : Which are exactly the pins to check? With re. to your picture form another post

gy6-0080-pinout_m_pgbk_off-png.1397

e.g for PGBK there are 2 pins in the top line (the black-taped ones, they should + if I understood correctly) and two in the bottom line (should be the -). Connecting one of the + pair with one of the - pair is fine or is there a specific order to follow (e.g. first + with first - etc.)?

Hello,

iP4300 uses QY6-0061 printhead and its connector has different layout. I found carriage connector layout (based on extended MP830 SM).

Please note 2 important things:
  1. Carriage connector layout is mirrored to printhead connector layout.
  2. Printhead connector has additional (unused) pins - they are not important, but confusing.
HV lines on carriage connector goes as follow:
  • RED - PGBK 24V
  • YELLOW - 5 pl CLI 24V
  • GREEN - 1 pl CLI 16V
(dashed lines means ground)

In order to disable heating in PGBK, seal (and do not remove) red marked pins with electrical tape.

So, PGBK pins should be located on opposite side of the connector compared to QY6-0072/QY6-0073/QY6-0080 connector.

There is another way to distinguish VH pins. They have different current inlets:
  • LV has ear-like SINGLE inlets (one inlet per one pin):
    lv_ears.png

  • HV has hole-like MULTIPLE inlets (2-3 inlets per 2-5 pins section):

Quite complex? Maybe not so :p

Greeeat!!! :bow

I want to check if my printhead is electrically shorted or defective. I have just bought a multimeter but I have little experience in electronics so I am wondering if you please could guide me in checking it.

To check PGBK I did the following:

Multimeter set on 200k ohms
first pin on head top row ( corresponding to #37 in your picture) connected with first pin on bottom row (corresponding to #1 in you rpict.), the instrument measured a value cycling between 30,9 and 31,5
second pin top with second pin low the same, between 30,5 and 31,1

Are these value correct?

Which are the pin to check for cyan?

Are you able to publish the complete schema of the pins?

Is there any other measurement that I can do?

Is it possible, and how, measure the contact in the carriage? may disonnecting the plug while the carriage in is center position and then measuring resistance?

Thank you again for your help

i have not tossed the printer on the scrap heep yet, i think it will make an interesting project, as far as disassembly for purge unit, ink pad replacement, and checking the print head with a meter

Hmmm...

While very bad short-circuits are possible to detect with multimeter, other defects (misprints) are almost out of reach for this method. But some open circuits can be detected.

According to some photos of QY6-0061 printhead connector (and MP830 SM data :p ), pinout should look like this:
qy6-0061 con desc CL.png

Pin groups:
  • RED, ORANGE - VH lines (24V and 16V respectively): means error "B200"
  • YELLOW - Anodes (temperature control and printhead detection: means errors "1401", "1403" (some "U052") and "051")
  • FUCHSIA - LV power system (3,3V): provides power to everything else but VH; "LGC GND" plays as Cathode for Anodes pins (DIA CL, DIA PGK).
  • BLUE - EEPROM communications signals (LV power are also necessary): means error "1405" (some "U051").
  • AQUA - Control signals for nozzles: if one or more are open, then some or all nozzles won't print.
  • (LIGHT) GREEN - Data for nozzles: if one of those pins is open, then nozzle check on "service test print" will be dashed.
For detecting "B200" condition, have to check every HV (RED, ORANGE) to every LV (FUCHSIA) in both directions. Typically should be 1,5-5 MOhms in dry printhead.

I will put some examples after Friday.

@Lukasz : thank you very much for this. I'll do some some check on my printhead and will post results.

We could do also a little guide to keep as a reference for other forum fellows
