If your modem was 5 years old I would be just a bit nervous about taking it back. I am thinking that it is only months old.
Warranty is a selling tool, has nothing to do with the Goods and its performance. The seller is obliged to deal with the Manufacturer, on your behalf, if the goods are not fit for the purpose for which they were intended or fail to give REASONABLE service (time).

Put on the boxing gloves and get to it!!:somad:somad:somad:lol:

I have 5...YES FIVE!!!!! modems sitting here in their boxes, each lasted approx 4-5 weeks, it took six different units (Netgear} to find one that did not overheat and die. The seller eventually upgraded me to an older, better made version, that was three years ago.
At the start they tried the warranty thing on me, that lasted just as long as it took to get the bulging eyes and the foaming at the lips going:gig Be sure to keep notes, record everything, including your posting here (especially) very effective tool for recalcitrant Manufacturers/Retailers!!

........An excellent site for information and help is SmallNetBuilders.com. Very knowledgeable people on the forums........Unlikely the issue as the device was working until two weeks ago. I would only upgrade router or client device software IF a specific fix listed for your issue(s) OR added functionality you NEED. Otherwise, avoid upgrading if the device is working. You may create more problems.

Resetting the router is worth a try. Record any non-default settings before resetting to facilitate setup afterwards.

^^^Snipped the above just to highlight points replying to and to keep things tidier.

With Netgear routers you can return to earlier firmware revisions without any problems (at least ive never had a problem returning to various firmware revisions on any Netgear device). DLink and TP-Link are another story.

For @Emulator his model can be found at http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/product/D6300#searchResults Currently a handfull of versions.

Upgrading can also help. If around him more people have stated using 5ghz then it is possible where he got a clean enough signal in his home before he is no longer getting a good signal and thus it drops out. Newer firmwares can help, if you look at some re-reviews for Netgear devices on the smallnetbuilder site you mentioned it shows this an excellent recent example being the R6300 (similar to his model but an AC device) and the massive improvement to wireless AC that has got just with a firmware update.

Upgrading a routers firmware you have nothing to fear as long as you can go back and on most netgears (in fact ALL netgear devices ive used) you can. The only other issue is having a power outtage mid-upgrade but those could damage it mid-upgrade or not depending on the type of power outtage anyway. Its quick and easy to do on Netgears, 30-60 seconds and is informative about its progress. Some netgear models even have firmware recovery if things do go wrong mid-upgrade.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful information. Clearly this site's competence extends way beyond printers!! The system has since continued to perform correctly.

By "clean" I meant, I seem to be the only person using 5G according to inSSIDer. I have only seen one other signal in the past. Whereas 2.4G has 6 or 7 users.

Another aspect of the D6300 I found pleasing, is that the signal levels at range are much better than all the previous modem/routers I had. It seems to have an internal mechanism to optimise the signal over time. Phasing of multiple internal antennas?

@Emulator

I accept you thanks....with grace, be informed and advised that it was MY words and my words alone that fixed the problem. :weee

Stands to reason after all the router would have read my advice before you did :)eek:)
and fixed itself so it did not have to do the long, lonely trip back to the shop and then out the back to the dumpster :thumbsup

Thanks for your thanks for my thanks for your thanks, I only hope they are not premature, these things have a habit of biting back. It would have been, or will be Amazon and I did remember to register the purchase with Netgear. It's only a few months old so replacement is usually straight forward in such cases, should it be necessary.

"We" remain blameless on the grounds of hereditary incompetence.:celebrate

I'm in hopes it was something that has now sorted itself. If its one of those things that requires a particular 'set' of circumstances to occur at the same time it can be a devil to isolate. fingers crossed.

The D6300 has decided to play up this morning. 5G is not connecting on either the PC or the Ipad, 2.4G is OK. The Queen of Hearts is yawning.

inSSIDer is showing that both signals are present, so it is the connection process that is failing on 5G, both initially and upon specific request.

I have printed out 5 pages of Windows Network Diagnostics and will plough through this later. But one thing that is a bit confidence destroying is that at the end, on page 5, it gives my correct computer name, but gives Windows Version 6.1, Architecture amd64, the time and date correctly. My Windows version being 7 Prof and processor Intel i7.

Something a bit obvious maybe but have you been through your router to ensure there is no timer like settings applied to anything? Netgear i believe have a "lease time" setting for DHCP which has been known to cause issue if that is set for a short period (i would not set it less than a couple of days or 48 hours). Also is there any settings for the wifi to reconnect upon loss of signal? Any QOS settings or setting for certain IP addresses to only be allowed at certain times?

If you have anything like that i suggest resetting the router (pin hole thing at back) and then setting it up for a week or so without any settings like the above applied (basically leave everything you can alone in its config, only change stuff you absolutely have to). If after a week or so it still loses connection then maybe time to look elsewhere for the issue.

If InSSIDer can see your 5Ghz signal then the router is technically still broadcasting it so it does not sound like a hardware issue to me with regards to the router but more likely a configuration issue either with router settings or other software.

Or the other thing it could be is another device you use wirelessly is in some fashion not playing ball with the router... Apple devices are known for this, no idea why, have just read loads of issues with wifi being lost after using i-devices and router having to be powered off and on. Do you use any devices that tend to switch between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz or any device which often has issues connecting? IF so connect those (especially if signal is weak) on only the 2.4Ghz and see what happens.

Im also assuming this is a pretty basic setup IE you do not have any additional routers and or switches connected to the netgear? If so ensure DHCP is OFF in them or if there is no OFF setting set IP addresses manually, the same range or similar can interfere when using more than one router.
