Photo paper and ink cartridges at Lidl DK

I wonder if this is similar to the "Big Mac index". I guess Lidl has clever economists calculating the optimum retail price for each country. Too low and you will sell a lot of cartridges but have a low profit per cartridge. Too high and you will have a high profit per cartridge but only sell a few. So an optimal retail price in between the two extremes must exist giving the biggest total profit on the cartridges.

It also might have something to do with the VAT rate…

From earlier threads about this photo paper it seems the price is higher in Denmark than in some other EU countries. I haven't checked VAT rates in different countries, but I think the Danish VAT rate is among the highest in the EU. It is 25%.

Thanks for the Aldi tip. I guess that Aldi in other countries might have a similar offer in the near future, so I think it is a good idea to check the Aldi ads also for those who want the paper and miss the Lidl offer.

The ad you copied clearly shows that the paper is made by Sihl, but last time I bought photo paper from Aldi it said Netbit on the back of the packet. Here is a reduced size scan of a pack of the paper, and a cropped scan of the Netbit part on the back:





It looks to me like the photos on the Sihl package and the Netbit package could be different crops of the same photo? I guess that a such photo might be copyrighted, so maybe Netbit is a distributor of Sihl products ?

I remember discussions about this Netbit paper from Aldi, both on this forum and on the druckerchannel.de forum when this paper was sold by Aldi. IIRC some meant the papers were identical, others meant the Sihl paper was the best with a higher gloss, but the Netbit paper was also good.

All of my United glossy paper says Sihl GmbH on it, and its A4 280 gm.

The paper packets I bought from Lidl last time it was offered look exactly like the ad you posted. It says "Sihl GmbH" on the back of the package.

Pretty safe bet Netbit is selling Sihl paper based on the image used on the packaging. Although, Europe is a bit freer in its copyrights, eg copying Blu-ray disks where DRM rights are involved.
