I've just bought a new Brother DCP-J152W and when trying to install the Brother software nothing happens. This is the first Brother printer, so I don't have any remains from previous Brother software. I tried the CD which came with the printer and the latest drivers from Brother website.
Using the latest drivers I only got the setup asking the language, and then nothing else happens. I already tried with different languages, but didn't solved.

You never said which O/S you were using but I suspect it was Mac O/S; the Brother software is too old and is not 64 bit compatible for that O/S your trying to use.

You could try splitting your hard drive and loading an older version of Mac O/S or Windows on that, then your Brother software will work for you, did you try the Mac website by any chance ?

I'm sorry, it is Windows 7 SP1 x64. I was able to figure out what is happening. It seems the InstallShield setup.exe crashes at start. It does not display any error message, it just crashes silently, but it leaves an error log on the event viewer log. It must be some bug with the installer. I already tried downloading the installation package from Brother USA and the same problem. Antivirus has been disabled as well, for debbuging purposes.

Sounds like a whole heap of potential OS based problems... You might want to try doing a Windows repair with the original OS disk and then reinstall all the patches/updates.

It's also very possible that InstallShield has been compromised by some nasty or other so if you can I'd recommend removing your hard drive to a caddy so it can be scanned by a machine that boots up independently of that particular hard drive.. Oh and remember to disable autorun so you don't pass on the infection (if any).

I was backing on my hunch that you were using Mac O/S but seen as your using win 7 then it’s a slightly worse problem to resolve than you think.

The windows installer itself may have gone duff (corrupted) and a reinstallation is about the only thing that will solve this issue for you, the repair disc can’t fix that problem by itself, sorry..

Windows installer is Ok, I tried to install another software using Install Shield 12 and it works perfectly. I found that the problem may lie on a bug in the setup.exe or _setup.dll files. I get a _setup.dll from another installation, and it started to install and then quit. The problem is caused by buggy Installshield version and Brother needs to address it. It may work on most systems, but it will fail on others.

There is nothing wrong with brothers drivers. If your OS is having issues with .dll files in any way that is an issue with your windows install not installshield. Installshield is nothing more than basically a software used to create a package install of several drivers and or custom installs (IE if you want to install several things in a specific order).

I suggest for now you visit...
http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=gb&lang=en&prod=dcpj152w_us_eu_as&os=93
and rather than downloading the FULL package (100 odd Mb) file you download all the individual drivers and utilities and install them one at a time.

You can also try the 32bit versions on you win 7 64bit...
http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=gb&lang=en&prod=dcpj152w_us_eu_as&os=92

Ultimately though you need to find what is the matter with your windows install to avoid further future issues with software.
