could just temporarily turn off your router to force it to use USB
not elegant but effective

I should be able to close it in settings but I'm not sure which is the MG5350, Here are the wi fi settings:
Obviously it's none of the Vodafone addresses, and the new printer is showing, so it's either the android one or the John one. Is that likely? If so, I can simply delete it.
Ok - took the printer offline by using system settings on the printer screen. It is now only connected to USB and I assume that the cable is OK because I can still print.
However, although I can get the printer into maintenance mode, it will not recognise the v3400 service tool. The screen for the tool appears and it is active but it does not work with the MG5350. Has anyone got another version of the tool that I can download and try?
Did you purchase the tool or did you got a free download ?.
In the later case, AFAIK ,all the free downloaded versions are fakes and won't work,.They do what you describe : the screen appears but you won't be able to perform any operation. Don't ask me how I know it.
It seems that the only working service tools are those that you purchase on Ebay. Prices are reasonable. I paid something like 7 or 8 euro last year for the V5.600.
The service tool v3400 does work with the MG5350, see this.
It is important that only the printer you want to do service mode operations on is connected to the computer. If more printers are connected to the computer, they can interfere with the function of the service tool. Could this be the cause of the problem?
I have never heard of fake versions of the v3400 or older version service tools. For the newer versions that are usually bought at E bay there have been free demo versions with limited functionality for free download.
Grrrr!!!! and various other expletives. Thank you muchly for that - I was beginning to go ballistic! I will indeed have a look on eBay - I have an account with them. Which tool would you recommend I use for the MG5350?
Thanks Peter. Yes, I have taken the other printers offline by actually unplugging them. Now, following your comment and Artur5's, I'm not sure what to do. He may be right - the MG is definitely in service tool mode and the service tool appears on the screen via Windows 10 and is active inasmuch as I can switch to the other pages on it. It just won't work within the pages. One suggestion was for changing the USB cable. The printer is working via USB but it is quite a long cable and I just wonder whether a shorter one will work better.
If the USB cable is more than 3 metres a shorter cable might be better. But if the cable works with the printer in normal operating mode, it should also work with the printer in service mode?
I have had problems with a long and thin USB cable. It worked with some printers but not with other printers. I dumped that cable,
