Might make sense to do the reverse - try your friend's printhead in your printer. Redbrickman seems to know more about this. I didn't know you could really risk printer damage with a bad printhead.

Search on this forum and you'll find information about it. In fact, I'm pretty sure I posted about it in this thread. And I was just throwing out my own experience. The fact is, a new printhead costs almost as much as a new printer, so I burned through a lot of money before coming to the realization that the printhead wasn't my problem. It may be your problem, though.

You might be in the same boat I was in. I had to clean/replace the purge unit. I tried in vain forever to clean my printhead(s), and that wasn't the problem at all. Just a thought. It was crazy that time and $ spent pretty much exceeded the original cost of the printer, but I hate waste and like...

After several different error codes, the only way I could get my printer working again was to put back the old purge unit. Seems I got a faulty purge unit straight from Canon. I'll be asking for my money back. (Edit). However, I guess my cleaning worked okay, because with my replacement/refurbed...

Looks like my saga may be coming to an end with the printer going in the circular file. I'm now getting an error 6A00. From what I've read, this error could have many causes, but the primary is a problem with the purge unit (which, in my case, is brand new). I've manually cycled it many times...

And I'm doubly stupid. For two weeks now I've been trying to find that second release arm I thought I'd lost - the one I finally got Canon to send me. As I began putting the printer back together, I realized the missing arm was still in position below the plate that sits under the printhead...

I'm stupid - just didn't look carefully enough through my manual. There are a couple of photos that confirm where I put it is correct. I'm not sure I follow what the function is, but it looks like that's the correct placement:

Wow, I'm amazed there's something you don't know about these printers. Thanks for letting me know, though. If anyone here has opened their printer up and see's how that spring is supposed to be placed, please let me know.

One last request for you (as if you haven't provided enough already) or anyone else here who's ever taken apart a Pixma MP. I just got Canon to send me a release arm (see above), because search high and low, I could not find a second one that fell out anywhere. Anyway, another part fell out...

So far, I've successfully removed, cleaned, and replaced the purge unit, but as I said previously, I think I poked small holes in a couple of tubes, so I think that would end up creating a new clogging problem. Hence, I ordered the new unit (for less than $18). My pads are actually pretty clean...
