I have the service manual, and I used it to disassemble and reassemble. I (ahem) modified the cover so the carriage wasn't hitting it, so that's not the problem anymore. I can't figure it out now. There doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong as far as I can tell. I'm going to keep looking...
